SPERDVAC is a non-profit educational public benefit corporation with six goals:
- To provide the finest collection of quality radio programs that members may listen to and duplicate for their own collections.
- To seek out and honor the people who made radio's "Golden Age" possible.
- To promote and encourage drama, variety and comedy programs—old and new—on radio today.
- To collect and maintain for members and other interested people, a library of radio history and to use this material in the publication of a “newsletter" or special brochures in preparation of an accurate and complete account of radio history from its earliest days to the present.
- To contribute to the support of non-commercial radio stations interested in and aiding the goals of the society, including broadcasting "old-time" radio programs.
- To alert members to trends in drama, variety and comedy broadcasting; and to publish special radio program listings and news releases to inform members and the general public.

Our next meeting will be May 11 at the
Mid Valley library. 16244 Nordhoff St, North Hills, Ca 91343.
It is located west of the Nordhoff exit from the 405 freeway.
Our guests are three child stars of early radio. Gloria McMillan appeared on The Great Guildersleeve, Our Miss Brooks, and Lux Radio Theater to name a few. She will be joined by veteran actor Tommy Cook known for his work on Red Ryder (as Little Beaver), Blondie, and Life of Riley. Conrad Binyon was a long time performer on One Man's Family, Mayor of the Town and Smilin' Ed's Buster brown Gang.

Our guest will be Gary Ono.
 During World War II, young Japanese American men fought for our country with unequaled battle records. Other Japanese Americans served as translators. To our national shame, some were interred during the war in Camps like Manzinar. Still others manned the microphones, and assisted the war effort by broadcasting into Japan. From the same studio in Denver, Colorado, the British Warfare Mission and the U. S. Office of War Information broadcast via short wave into Japan. Both organizations recruited young Japanese Americans who spoke fluent Japanese, had gone to Japan to study, and were completely familiar with the current Japanese culture. After the war these broadcasters did not generally talk about their experiences. It came as a surprise to Gary Ono to learn that his father, Sam Masami Ono, had been one of these broadcasters for the British.
With a grant from the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program and with his own personal Redress and Reparation funds, Gary Ono has produced a documentary of these “other side of Tokyo Rose” broadcasters. Calling Tokyo features newsreel footage and interviews with some of these broadcasters, describing what they did and what it was like.
Gary will show most of his documentary (total time is 47:30 minutes) and discuss these vital broadcasters.
