January 8th 2005 SPERDVAC Meeting guest is

BERYL DAVIS

If anyone was destined to be a big band singer, it must have been Beryl Davis. The daughter of English band leader Harry Davis, Beryl was born during one of her father's tours and spent many of her formative years traveling with the band on the road. It was only a matter of time before she became the featured singers in the band. She loved big band jazz and began to emulate the styles of American singers such as Ella Fitzgerald. She developed into the premier British big band singer, touring Europe with Stephane Grappelli, George Shearing and Ted Heath.

Glenn Miller discovered Beryl in London and enlisted her to sing with his highly acclaimed Air Force Orchestra. She was the only British civilian officially attached to the Eighth Air Force, taking her orders directly from General James Doolittle.

Beryl is a dynamic performer. Concert performances with Mel Torme, the Gene Krupa Orchestra, the Kay Kyser Band, "A Salute to Glenn Miller" series, and guest spots with Stephane Grappelli keep her busy on the international music scene.

The Gramophone was the first machine to play flat disc records and its success led to the formation of Victor Records, then to RCA & RCA Victor Records. This recording process led to transcribing radio shows, which makes it possible for us to hear and enjoy the great shows from radio's golden years. Oliver Berliner, lecturer & long-time record producer told the true story of the early years of the recording industry and set the "record straight" (pun intended!). The meeting was free and open to the public.
